Day-to-day work at PUMST consists of sorting and tidying up of the document files. Presently, a complete set of documents of the Department of the Polish Ministry of Interior are being re-archived. Archival work is also being undertaken on the collection of photographs and negatives. Cataloguing of documents belonging to the so-called Third Verification Commission is also nearing completion.
The duties of the PUMST personnel, aided by the volunteers, include helping the persons who visit PUMST in their search for the required collections. Every year about 90 persons visit the Study Trust at Leopold Road; among whom: professional historians, students, employees of various TV stations and others are using our services.
Apart from the personal visits, several hundred searches are made every year by post and telephone: among which are searches for service data and length of service of the Home Army soldiers, as well as searching for members of families etc.
PROJECTS AND PLANS
The digitalization Project of documents of the VIth Bureau (Oddzial VI) has been in progress since August 2004. The main aim of this project is to secure the documentation and to provide a better access to information for all interested parties. This is to be achieved by introduction of a database and own internet website.
In order to promote knowledge about the WWII Polish Underground State and its armed force the Home Army (Armia Krajow - AK), a series of exhibitions, symposia and workshops are regularly organized in London for Polish Saturday Schools and other Polish Émigré Institutions.
This project is largely funded by the British Heritage Lottery Fund.
A publication of the WWII documents concerning Polish Home Committee (KSK) is in its final preparation.
CO-OPERATION AND COLLABORATION
PUMST is a member of the Standing Conference of Polish Museums, Archives and Libraries in the West - an organization that unites all Polish scientific and research institutions mainly in the countries of Western and Central Europe as well as in North America.
Beside collaboration with kindred émigré institutions, cooperation with institutions in Poland is also developing. Joint publishing activities are carried out with the Polish Institute of National Remembrance and the Publishing House "Karta". In turn, year after year, students of the Institute of Librarianship and Information Science of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow work at the PUMST Library; this is an extension of their work curriculum..
